Da Nang

Da Nang, Central Vietnam

Vietnam’s fourth city sits between a long beach and the Marble Mountains, with an international airport that makes it the easiest way into central Vietnam.

Highlights

  • My Khe Beach, wide and swimmable, along the eastern edge of the city
  • The Marble Mountains: caves, pagodas and viewpoints inside five limestone hills
  • Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, reached by one of the longest cable cars in the world
  • The Cham Sculpture Museum, with the best collection of Cham art in Vietnam
  • Linh Ung Pagoda on the Son Tra peninsula, and the Dragon Bridge, which breathes fire on weekend evenings

Best time to visit

February to August is dry and sunny. October and November are the wettest months.

Getting there

Da Nang International Airport is 10 minutes from the centre, with domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City of about 1 hour 20 minutes. Hoi An is 45 minutes away, Hue about 3 hours over the pass.

How long to stay

Two to three days.

Where to stay

The beach strip along My Khe has the resorts; the city centre near the Han River is cheaper and closer to the markets and the bridges. Many travellers sleep in Da Nang and visit Hoi An for the day, or the other way round.

What to eat

Mi Quang, turmeric noodles with pork and prawns, banh xeo with rice paper and herbs, and seafood by the kilo at the beachfront restaurants. Nem lui, grilled pork skewers, are a Da Nang and Hue staple.

Good to know

  • January to May is the driest stretch; August to December is quieter but wetter.
  • The Dragon Bridge breathes fire and water on Saturday and Sunday evenings at 9 PM.
  • Ride-hailing apps, taxis and cyclos all work in the city.
