Da Lat, Central Vietnam

A highland town at 1,500 m, cool all year, laid out by the French among pine forests and lakes. It supplies much of Vietnam’s flowers, vegetables and coffee.

Best time to visit

December to March is dry and cool, with mornings around 12–15°C. The rainy season runs from June to October, usually with afternoon showers.

Getting there

Lien Khuong Airport is about 40 minutes from town, with flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. By road it is about 4 hours from Mui Ne and 6–7 hours from Ho Chi Minh City.

Two to three days.

Where to stay

Around Xuan Huong Lake and the centre for restaurants and the night market; the hillsides outside town have pine-forest lodges and flower-farm stays, cooler and quieter.

What to eat

Banh trang nuong, grilled rice paper, sold on the street corners, artichoke tea and soup, strawberries and avocados from the farms, and Da Lat’s own coffee.

Good to know

  • Average temperatures stay between about 15 and 24°C all year, which is why it is called the city of eternal spring.
  • November to May is the dry season, about 10–25°C. Bring a jacket for the evenings.
