Phong Nha

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site built on 400-million-year-old limestone. It holds hundreds of caves, including Son Doong, the largest cave passage in the world.
Highlights
- Phong Nha Cave, entered by boat along an underground river
- Paradise Cave, 31 km long, with a wooden walkway through the first kilometre
- Dark Cave, for mud baths, ziplines and swimming
- The Bong Lai valley, farms and river swimming spots outside the park

Best time to visit
February to August. The park is wettest from September to November, when some caves close for safety.
Getting there
Dong Hoi is the nearest airport and train station, about 45 minutes away. By road it is roughly 4.5 hours from Hue.

Two to three days.
Where to stay
Phong Nha village has homestays, guesthouses and a few small hotels; there are farmstays and bungalows in the Bong Lai valley outside the village. Dong Hoi, by the sea, is the alternative if you want a bigger town.
What to eat
Chao canh, a Quang Binh noodle soup, banh loc, tapioca dumplings with shrimp and pork, and seafood in Dong Hoi.
Good to know
- Since 1 July 2025 the park is administered under Quang Tri province.
- February to August is the dry season; from September to November some caves close when the rivers rise.
- The park has more than 300 caves, including Son Doong, the largest cave passage in the world.
