Sapa

A mountain town at 1,500 m in the Hoang Lien Son range, surrounded by rice terraces carved by H’Mong, Dao, Tay and Giay communities. Above it stands Fansipan, at 3,147.3 m the highest peak in Indochina.
Highlights
- Walking between villages in the Muong Hoa valley, from Lao Chai to Ta Van
- Fansipan by mountain train and cable car, with pagodas and a Great Buddha near the summit
- Cat Cat, a Black H’Mong village at the foot of the mountain, with workshops and a waterfall
- Local markets where hill-tribe families trade, and hand-dyed indigo textiles
Best time to visit
March to May and September to November are clearest. Rice terraces are green from June and golden in September. Winter is cold and can be foggy, with occasional frost at the top.
Getting there
About 5.5–6 hours by road from Hanoi on the expressway, or an overnight sleeper bus or train to Lao Cai.
How long to stay
Two to four days: a full day in the valley, half a day for Fansipan, and time for a second walk.
Where to stay
Sapa town has the hotels, restaurants and the market; the Muong Hoa valley has homestays and small lodges among the rice terraces, quieter and closer to the walking paths.
What to eat
Grilled skewers by the market on a cold evening, thang co and black chicken in the local eateries, salmon and sturgeon farmed in the cold streams nearby, and corn wine served by the shot.
