Pu Luong

Pu Luong, Northern Vietnam

A nature reserve of terraced hillsides, bamboo water wheels and Thai and Muong hamlets, less visited than Sapa and easier to reach from Hanoi.

Highlights

  • Walking between hamlets, on paths through rice terraces and forest
  • The old bamboo water wheels that still lift water into the fields
  • Hieu village and its stream of small waterfalls
  • Lodges looking out over the valley, most with a pool

Best time to visit

Rice is green from May to July and gold in late September and October. Winter is cool and misty; the trails are muddy in heavy summer rain.

Getting there

About 4–5 hours by road from Hanoi, often combined with Mai Chau.

How long to stay

Two nights.

Where to stay

Valley lodges with infinity pools above the terraces, and family homestays in Hieu and Kho Muong villages for a simpler stay closer to daily life.

What to eat

Hill chicken, grilled pork with forest herbs, stream fish and vegetables grown in the valley; most lodges cook a set dinner for guests.
